Credit Underwriting Manager, Equipment Finance

FT/PT:  Full-Time

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Divisional Credit Officer (DCO) and working closely with the Line of Business Director (LOB-D), other Credit Underwriting Managers and sales teams, this position is responsible for the management of credit underwriters in one or more locations. The primary task is to underwrite larger equipment lease or loan transactions in addition to managing credit underwriter's activities on smaller transactions.  This position will also work closely with the DCO on various credit initatives and projects as needed.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business with a major or minor in finance or accounting.
  • Master’s degree required.
  • Equipment Lease experience required.
  • Minimum of 7 years of supervisory and/or management experience. 
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in Commercial Credit, including larger and more complex transactions and in Portfolio Risk Management.
  • The ability to underwrite complex financial transaction requests.  
  • The ability to make independent decisions as to what type of analysis is needed based on prior knowledge of the transaction type and or knowledge of the industry and client involved.
  • The ability to recommend and advocate for actions to be taken based on the risk profile of a client.
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting and legal principles underlying commercial lending.
  • Strong problem solving and follow up skills with the ability to make decisions based on research.
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal, internal and external.
  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to train/mentor peers.
  • Good customer service skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Position may require the need to travel to other offices or client locations.
  • Possess the ability to clearly demonstrate their position on a request and professionally defend it, if challenged.
     

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manages team of credit underwriters under the guidance of the LOB-D and DCO, assists in prioritizing and managing the work flows to meet the needs for the assigned lending teams.
  • Provides training and guidance in completion of credit underwriting and the preparation of approval presentations.
  • Provides training and guidance in completion of risk management, monitoring and tracking.
  • Verifies that the team is conducting in depth review of balance sheet, income statement, other financial information, tax returns, business plans and projections to independently determine that the borrower can generate income and cash flow sufficient to repay existing and proposed debt.
  • Ensures that presentations are thorough and include the request, purpose, the business and/or industry involved, the background and history of the business.  It also outlines the risk and mitigating factors to justify assigned risk rating and show that Bank policies, procedures and regulations are met.
  • Assists Commercial Relationship Managers in prioritizing and managing workflow of new prospects, modifications, renewals/upcoming maturities, Portfolio Reviews and Special Asset Reports while developing a working knowledge of all prospective opportunities.
  • Interacts with clients to obtain financial information necessary to support the underwriting and risk management process of Commercial Banking loans.
  • Accompanies Commercial Relationship Managers on client and prospect calls in conjunction with completion of the underwriting process of Commercial Banking loans or as it relates to portfolio risk management.
  • Confirms that the team is obtaining and reviewing third party reports such as equipment valuations, PayNet reports, CBR's, and Field Exams as required.
  • In partnership with the Commercial Relationship Managers and Line Managers, assists with the training of the Rotational Development Program Participants on the nuances of client and financial analysis. 
  • Maintains a network of financial and legal professionals to support the knowledge necessary to complete any necessary analysis.
  • Participates in all required training for compliance.
  • Maintains adequate controls to ensure compliance with consumer protection statutes/regulations in a defined area of responsibility.
  • Assists in training new team members which may include underwriters, Relationship Managers, administrative support and interns.
